Captain Caps Earn Popular Reputation

Working-class men started using peaked caps back in the early 19th-century in Northern Europe and their popularity grew in all classes over time. It was the cap’s light weight and comfort that earned them a place in the headwear of choice for military and public safety personnel world-wide. The captain hats are known for the formal image that their peaked crown evokes. Military officers have included them in their service dress.

The coloring, ornamentation and embellishments on the captain hats have been used as visual indicators of rank, service branch, status, and to signify belonging. They can take the cap into costume parties, Halloween celebrations, theatre, and even to become accessory favorites for bikers and celebrities. Harley-Davidson created the collectable road captain hat with a logo, front patch in the 1950s. Elvis Presley was seen wearing captain caps when he motorcycled in the 50s. In 2017, Lady GaGa had some appearances in captain hats with eye-catching embellishments that were truly memorable.

Is a Captain Cap a Baker Boy Hat?

In 2017, designers included baker boy hats in their Fall lines and the lines tended to blur as to which traditional, hat styles actually fit and could ride the growing popularity wave. The newsboy hats with their relaxed, six-panel crowns have been referenced by the bakerboy name since their early days. With their similarly soft crowns that are rounded and not sectioned, fisherman caps, glide into the same baker boy hat style. The captain cap has the same hat band and bill that is similar to those two styles, but that’s where the similarity stops. It’s crown is more structured as it will have a stiff, peaked front and the structure may extend all the way around the crown. Thus, strictly speaking, it should not be included in the baker boy hats. Still, the captain cap slips into the collective name on occasion.

Captain Cap Gets Created

The fisherman cap had been on my list of hats I really wanted to make for some time. It was early in 2018 that its time had come. As I worked on that cap, I began experimenting with the crown. One thing truly did lead to another and the captain cap became an addition to my headwear collection, too.

I had to take a picture of the first captain cap. I prefer to work with colors, but know how popular black is for headwear. So, this one really was basic, black. Press here for the black captain cap.
