Boonie Hat FAQs

Do your boonie hats come in real sizes?

Yes. Our boonie hats are made in real sizes—not one-size-fits-most.

Available in three size ranges based on your head circumference:

  • Regular (M–L): fits approx. 22″–23″ (labeled 22)
  • Big (1XL–2XL): fits approx. 24″–25″ (labeled 24)
  • Really Big (3XL–4XL): fits approx. 26″–27″ (labeled 26)

Each hat is designed to sit comfortably and stay in place without constant adjustment.

An exact-fit Velcro adjuster lets you fine-tune the fit—so you can dial it in just the way you like.

If you’ve struggled to find a hat that stays put, this is where you’ll feel the difference.

See our size chart for full details and measuring help.

What are boonie hats best used for?

They’re made for real life — from festivals and dog walks to gardening, fishing, hiking, camping, travel, and everyday outdoor wear.

The full brim is designed to provide comfortable shade coverage for the face, ears, and neck while still allowing airflow through the mesh panels.

Customers also use them for practical work situations where staying cooler, getting sun coverage, and keeping a hat secure really matter.

Once people find their fit, it often becomes the hat they reach for every day.

Will the boonie hat stay on in wind or movement?

The full brim and chin cord system help keep the hat secure during everyday movement and outdoor wear.

The cord can be worn several ways depending on activity, airflow, and personal preference: The chin strap is a single strap that has a loop on the back and on the front it has the ends with cord stops. Consider the wind direction and the way the work is being done.

  • Wind is from the front and typical work:
Wear the chin cord with the cord stop under the chin.
  • Wind is from the back and typical bending down work:
Wear the chin cord with the cord stop low along the back of the head.
  • Wind is blowing from several directions and work will be frequently changing:
Wear the chin cord with the cord stop under the chin and wear the loop of the chin cord low along the back of the head.

Many customers adjust the cord differently throughout the day depending on comfort, movement, and weather conditions.

Can I shape the brim different ways?

Yes.

The brim is designed to be flexible, so you can wear it down for fuller coverage or lift the sides for a sleeker profile and more airflow.

The chin cord can also be secured over the crown to help shape the brim and create alternate wear styles.

What back styles are available on your boonie hats?

Rawls-Riley Creations boonie hats are made in two different back styles.

Traditional Back Style

A classic closed-back design with a smooth, continuous fit around the crown.

Dual Back Style

Designed to give you more ways to wear the hat.

The hidden back opening allows long hair or a ponytail to be worn through the back when desired — while still maintaining a smooth, finished look when worn with hair down.

Each individual product listing will show which back style that specific hat is made with.

If you would like a different back style than what is shown on the product listing, a custom request can usually be made.

Are these boonie hats waterproof or made for rain?

No — these are not waterproof rain hats.

Most of the fabrics used are breathable cottons and natural-fiber materials chosen for comfort, airflow, and everyday wear rather than water repellency.

Heavy rain can soften the brim and change how the hat drapes while wet.

If you specifically need a rain hat or waterproof outdoor gear, this is probably not the best choice.

Are boonie hats good for hot weather?

Yes — they’re built for it.

Mesh panels allow air to move, while the full brim provides shade to help keep you cooler during long days outside.

How do I care for my hat?

Most hats can be machine washed cold and air dried or tumble dried on low. You can iron on low as needed.

For linen hats, we recommend dry cleaning to help preserve color and finish.
