Behind the Seams: In the Shop at Rawls-Riley Creations

2025 APR 28 – Custom Plant Lace Floppy Band and Coral Floppy Hat

At Rawls-Riley Creations, I believe nothing beautiful should ever go to waste. That philosophy has guided my headwear journey from the beginning — and it’s alive today as I prepare new custom floppy hat bands for the upcoming Spring Pecan Street Festival in Bee Cave, Texas.

One of the joys of working with high-quality fabrics is finding creative ways to repurpose the leftovers. Scraps from my other headwear projects — like silky materials from head wraps, delicate lace from slouchy beanies and patrol caps, and performance fabrics from skull caps and headbands — are too good to toss aside. That’s where my floppy hat bands come in: an eco-friendly way to create fresh, one-of-a-kind designs that give new life to every last piece.

Today’s Creation:

I’m currently crafting a custom floppy hat band featuring a basic green performance fabric for the main band, silky ties adorned with a lovely plant print, and touches of white lace for a delicate accent. It’s paired with one of my coral floppy hats, creating a light, lively, and totally unique combination perfect for sunny days.

This new band — like all of my floppy hat bands — is made to be removable and interchangeable thanks to a smart Velcro design. Whether you want to refresh your favorite hat or personalize a brand-new one, my bands let you mix and match looks easily. It’s a design choice that dates back to the first floppy hats I offered after focusing into headwear making — ensuring customers could express their style and get more wear from their hats.

A Legacy of Creativity:

The idea to make custom floppy hat bands actually came from my earliest days focusing into headwear. After a successful launch of beanies at the 2013 Maple Leaf Festival, I realized I needed something perfect for the warmer seasons. Floppy hats were the answer — but I wanted mine to stand out. Inspired by my childhood memories of my mom sewing dazzling dance costumes, I decided to make fancy, artisan hat bands instead of gluing something generic onto hats.

Velcro fastening was my solution — allowing every customer to find their own favorite combination. Later, I began patchworking the bands, using smaller scraps to create even more unique, resourceful designs. Every band tells a story — and every hat becomes a conversation starter.
